HIV Rapid Test Q & A:
How do you know you are infected?
If you have engaged in any unsafe sexual activities (unprotected anal, vaginal or oral sex), you will have a higher risk of being affected by the HIV virus. Conducting a HIV Anti-body test will allow you to determine your HIV status.
Does the test take long?
The rapid HIV anti-body test only takes 10 minutes to have the result. It has the same accuracy rate as the traditional test, by checking the existence of anti-body in the blood sample.
How does the rapid test take place?
Rapid test only needs a tiny drop of blood from the finger tip. The blood will be tested against the HIV testing solution and the result will be ready in 10 minutes.
A negative result shows there is no sign of HIV infection from the blood sample. A positive result indicates the tester may have been infected by the HIV virus.
A traditional test will be needed to re-confirm the result. Be aware that if this test is carried out within the 3 months (window period) when the infection took place, the tester’s body may not have generated enough HIV Anti-bodies to be identified by the testing solution.
What are the benefits of knowing earlier of being infected?
Although HIV is not curable, it is totally controllable and manageable. The Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART or ‘cocktail’) has treated HIV as a chronic illness since 1998. HIV patients can maintain a healthy body, live a good and quality life, and continue to have long life expectancy. The key to the success of the treatment will be regular appointments with doctors, medication adherence and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Too stressed to have the test? Is it better not to know?
It is not an easy step to have the HIV test. But if you are always anxious and worry about your own HIV status, or you fear you may have passed on the virus to others, it may be a better move to know the result early and tackle your fear.
